(ATR) The Vancouver 2010 flame reaches the most populous city in Canada on Day 49 of the torch relay where international superstar carries the torch.
Yesterday highlights include the torch traveling southwest through 11 towns and being carried by one Olympian on its journey to Toronto.
Today, the torch relay departs Oshawa and journeys to the towns of Whitby, Ajax and Pickering where figure skating Olympian Brian Orser will be a torchbearer.
The flame continues travel to Whitchurch-Stouffville and then progresses on to Markham where ice hockey Olympian Gillian Apps and athletics Olympians Nicole Forrester and Bill Crothers are scheduled as torchbearers. A welcome celebration is planned at Markham City Hall and will include live entertainment and performances.
The torch proceeds to the towns of Richmond Hill and Thornhill, an upscale community located on the northern border of Toronto.
The Olympic Torch reaches its final destination point of the day in Ontario’s provincial capital, Toronto, where Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar will run with the Olympic Flame up Yonge Street. Kumar is a leading star in the Indian film industry.
Eight Olympians are scheduled to carry the torch through Toronto including athletics Olympians James Worrall, Paul Craig and Robert Finlay, swimming Olympian Owen Von Richter, sailing Olympian Paul Henderson, ice hockey Olympian Vicky Sunohara, rowing Olympian Marnie McBean and softball Olympian Erin McLean.
The flame is also scheduled to be transported by ice hockey 1948 gold medalist Murray Dowey as he rides on a Toronto streetcar.
A welcome celebration is planned at Nathan Phillips Square including international music, dancing and fireworks finale. CTV Toronto plans to cover the relay, runners, events and festivities in a two-hour live broadcast, THE TORCH IN TORONTO, beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
Tomorrow, the torch makes its way through 12 towns, will be carried by three Olympians and reaches the tip of Lake Simcoe, the fourth largest lake in Ontario.
